Townsend House - Adelaide, South Australia. The institution focused on education of children who were Blind, Deaf and Hearing Impaired, being proud of their success and engaging new ideas and technology to support their goals. In 1938, a paper titled “Work with Multitone” was presented by a teacher from the Sydney Institution. The paper stated that it had improved children’s speech, who were “partially deaf or for those with varying degrees of residual hearing”. One was ordered and arrived from England. The Multitone was a group instrument fitted with eight separate earphones. The unit allowed each child to be fitted individually allowing the child to control their own tone and volume. As a result, a hearing aid class was formed at the school.
